We've traveled the world one bite at a time!

 image

We've cooked our way from island to island as we explored archipelagos.  This summer our Quest had us in the Azores, the Bahamas, Greece, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand/Indonesia, and New York City. Now comes the hard part of the Quest! image

Dates: Aug 26-30th  before 7pm central
Style of Challenge: individual non cooking
Points: 2 points per team member OR 25 points if all team members complete the assignment

The Challenge:
We've tried some wonderful food from varied cuisines on our journey.
The assignment is to share the TWO recipes which won your (or your family's) vote for Best of the Quest. What made you sigh with pleasure or fulfilled your desire to learn a new technique?
Which two recipes would you proudly share with friends and family or want to make again? In other words, of those you tried which two recipes would you declare Best of the Quest 2016?

Please Remember to:
~Share your favorite two recipes AND tell us why those made your top two list.
~Include a working link and photo (if you took one) for both recipes.
~Everyone likes to see their name in lights so be sure to include the posting chef for each recipe.
~Include your team banner in your post.

image... For the Sisters,

BUT mostly for Siggi & myself, I'm here to share the recipes I saw as our favorites of CQ #3. We all know the time will come for us to do the hardest part of the Quest, but I was strangely ready to speak for my choices this time. Here are my 2 co-winners for Best of the Quest 2016, both from the New York Region:

http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/soup/creamy-soup/carrot-vichyssoise.html?p=2 by Mikekey was especially memorable for a ton of reasons that all end in the word "friendly". It's all these things: Prep-friendly, ingredient-friendly, palate-friendly w/a lovely flavor & texture, guest-friendly (I know because it was served to a family guest) & Presentation-friendly because it can be made ahead & served cold, hot or at room temp (my choice). My only regret is that my pic failed to give it the justice it deserved.
image

http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/breakfast/other-breakfast/n-y-c-smoked-salmon-breakfast-bagels.html by Annacia - I doubt there is much surprise at this choice as it's basics are a classic favorite of my country, but this recipe expands it to a greater dimension (with the emphasis on "greater"). The addition of eggs made it a warm breakfast sammie, more filling & a perfect brunch entree I will soon share w/Siggi's family & my own from the USA & Canada.
image... (Photo by lazyme)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've never been able to leave all the other great recipes behind w/o at least having a couple of "Honorable Mentions". Siggi & I each picked 1 & his choice from the Bahamas Region was https://cookingonpage32.wordpress.com/2014/09/04/lime-and-buttermilk-cake/ by Leggy Peggy. He affectionately called it the "Frog Cake" because I added green food coloring, knowing he & his brother would expect it to be lime green.
image
My choice was http://stella-marisa.livejournal.com/532501.html, a recipe from the Thailand-Indonesia Region by Starrynews. I hope this recognition of her recipe will help her to forgive me for my creative nature. Altho written for skewers, the recipe also allowed for it to be made & served as a salad (my choice), but I made it as a mixed fruit salad instead of all-melon as it was written. It has since become a much-requested family standard.
P.S.
My thx to our lovely Hosts & to all of you who so kindly chose to make & review my recipes. Ea of you are another Best of the Quest. image
For the Sister team:
This may be the toughest part of the tour. I just looked at all of the recipes I saved in my 'best of 2016' file on Pinterest and had such a tough time narrowing it down to two! These are two that really did stand out:
1. https://spinthegloberecipes.wordpress.com/2016/07/07/portuguese-pork-with-clams/ by threeovens for the Azores region. Wow. Can I just say wow?! This was a dish to impress, savor, and was lick-the-dish-good.
2. https://artandkitchen.wordpress.com/2016/07/07/thai-coconut-curried-chicken/ by artandkitchen for the Thailand/Indonesia region. I'm picking this one because it was my biggest surprise of the tour. I didn't think I was a huge fan of curries - even after I sampled the sauce at the beginning of cooking this recipe. Then magic happened. The sauce was to-die-for good and the chicken was so tender and flavorful. The flavors were really complex. If you can find an Asian market, the ingredients are easy to find and inexpensive.
Honorable Mentions:
http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/dessert/cake/lindys-new-york-cheesecake.html?utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share by lazyme for NYC -  WOW
http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/harlems-fried-chicken-and-buttermilk-waffles-24606 by ForeverMama for NYC- a fun and excellent combination of flavors.
I really could go on.... image
THANK YOU to the Quest guides for another fabulous tour. You all really knock yourselves out year after year and make this a great experience. I truly look forward to it every year. Thank you very much!!! image
For the Sisters of the Travelling Pans.
My Best of the Quest are so easy to choose. They are the recipes I've already made more than once.
First off is an oh-so-simple recipe by Lavender Lynn. I've made it with fresh beetroot, as well as tinned.
Fresh is marginally beter, but only just. I made it again tonight.
http://www.food.com/recipe/simple-greek-beet-salad-503006 by Lavendar Lynn
My second choice is the amazing
https://artandkitchen.wordpress.com/2015/12/03/tuna-steak-with-salsa/ by artandkitchen (Awalde)
This is her pic. I can't get mine to stick here.
I'll be back soon with some honourable mentions.
The "Best of the Quest" is always the hardest part of the Quest for me. Every recipe I tried was delicious, but a couple really stood out above the rest and I will be making both of those again soon.
The 1st recipe was http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/main-course/main-course-chicken/chicken-teriyaki.html by lazyme. I was very surprised that a recipe with so few ingredients could have so much flavor. It was just as delicious the next day, too. Thanks for sharing this yummy recipe, Vic!
image
The 2nd recipe was http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/main-course/sandwiches/how-to-make-katzs-famous-pastrami-reuben.html by Annacia. Reuben sandwiches made with pastrami are one of my all-time favorite sandwiches. I prefer them not to be slathered in butter and fried, and this recipe didn't do that. I found myself saying 'mmmm' with every bite. I would also like to mention that I used Lavender Lynn's http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/main-course/sandwiches/reuben-sandwich.html for the Russian Dressing portion for Annacia's recipe.
image
THANK YOU to the hosts for all of the time and effort they put in, making this quest a huge success. You are all so awesome!! I look forward to the Quest and I can't wait until next year.
This was very hard to do, but here are my two picks:
1. I loved this salad because it has such a delicious combination of textures, colors and flavors. The dressing is light and sweet and tangy, and it balances the salad perfectly. I can see many possibilities with it as well, adding some cooked chicken or shrimp would make it a great main dish salad.
http://www.food.com/recipe/thai-noodle-and-vegetable-salad-504428?photo=385478 by my fellow sister LifeIsGood
image
2. http://www.food.com/recipe/pineapple-coconut-empanadas-95647 by SusieD These empanadas were my family's top pick, they loved the combination of the sweet filling and the flaky crust. What I liked the best was that both the pastry and the filling were very easy to make and handle. I'm sure these will be made again and again in my house.
image
I have to make some honorable mentions as well.
http://www.food.com/recipe/passion-fruit-colada-504282, this was my hubby's favorite
image
http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/drink/drink-cocktail/ginger-spice.html?p=34 by Annacia, this will become a regular in our repertoire
 image
And finally, my daughter's favorite:
My favorite part of the tour is seeing everyone's favorites. I just had to buy a binder to print and collect all the recipes I still want to try!
My #1 this year was Classic Thai Fried Rice by lazyme. I've never had curry paste in fried rice before and it was completely addicting!
http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/side/rice-side/classic-thai-fried-rice.html
image
#2 was Penne Alla Vodka by LifeIsGood http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/main-course/pasta/penne-alla-vodka-2.html. I loved the simplicity of this sauce which really let all the flavors shine. A classic but goody. (sorry, didn't take a photo for this one).
This is the hardest part indeed, and actually I'm going to make *all* recipes again. The pastrami sandwich from the Challenge might be difficult to make again, because pastrami is seldom available here. A real pity, but I'm going to find a decent substitute for pastrami so I can make it again.
So - I picked the two recipes which made DH cry "five stars" after the first bite. Why do I choose that for a criteria? Because Dh still is in a depressive phase of his bipolar disorder, and he's not easily getting enthusiastic about anything. So if a dish makes him cry out immediately, that's somethign that makes me *very* happy
The two dishes which made this happen were:
ForeverMama's http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/new-york-new-york-pushcart-chicken-24158 an incredibly tasty way to make chicken, and quite different from most other chicken recipes which I've made so far.
And Lavender Lynn's http://www.food.com/recipe/spaghetti-with-tomatoes-black-olives-garlic-and-feta-cheese-503003 these were fabulous. So simple, and really fabulous. My favourite way to eat spaghetti used to be Spaghetti cacio e pepe, but this recipe might replace that!
I love soup and http://www.food.com/recipe/chicken-bacon-and-white-bean-soup-portuguese-style-370726?soc=socialsharingpinterest by LifeIsGood is one of the best soups I have made in awhile. While I did make a few ingredient substitutions there was no loss of flavor and I think next time I could put this in the crock pot. A versatile and wonderful soup from a fellow Sister.
Since my husband helped rate recipes I asked him what his favorite was and he voted for http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/main-course/beef/classic-delmonico-steak-with-herbed-butter.html by Northwestgal. Not only did he get a great ribeye steak dinner but that herb butter took it over the edge. A bit of planning goes into this because the butter has to go back in the fridge to meld flavors and harden but after that it goes quick. Any herbs that you prefer or even just garlic would be a great add in to the butter.  A hot steak right off the grill and then the flavor of the herbs and butter soaking in, amazing!
My honorable mentions are
http://www.food.com/recipe/agourontomatosalata-308203 by momaphet and http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/salad/green-salad/parmesan-peppercorn-wedge-salad.html?p=26 by Mikekey. The tomato salad has simple ingredients but the flavors are bright and wonderful. A nice wedge salad with a very nice warm peppery tasting dressing. Both side dishes will be made often.
For SISTERS OF THE TRAVELING PANTSUITS, my top two favorite recipes are:
1. http://www.justapinch.com/recipes/side/side-other-side-dish/santorinian-tomato-rissoles-tomatokeftedes.html by Annacia
2. https://randomcreativityrecipes.wordpress.com/2014/08/15/coconut-bake/ by Random Rachel
Another example of a rustic recipe that withstands the test of time. The red-orange color of the tomatoes in this photo looks
oversaturated however I did not use any color adjustment when uploading. I chose the best quality,
freshest organic tomatoes from a local community farm. The leftovers were delicious the next morning with
fluffy scrambled eggs for breakfast scooped up with pita!
