Traveling the world one bite at a time!

New York City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and with good reason. NYC is the mecca of business in the United States, and as a melting pot of American culture, there is something for every style, taste and budget in New York City. NYC is the most populated city in the America, with more than 8 million people currently living in NYC. New York City is also the most diverse U.S. city, with residents hailing from every corner of the globe. New York City is a city of many names, including "The Big Apple," "The City That Never Sleeps,"and even "Gotham City." Perhaps the most culturally rich city in America, NYC has inspired hundreds of classic songs - most notably Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York," and "Empire State of Mind" by Jay-Z.

Round 3: Aug 12- Aug 25

You may be asking how New York City fits into our archipeglio theme. 42 islands comprise this city’s diverse archipelago.    Within the city’s boundaries there are dozens of islands―some famous, like Ellis, some infamous, like Rikers, and others forgotten, like North Brother. Each and every one of them has a unique history - most were settled at one time or another, most are abandoned now - as well as a unique ecosystem.  While the spotlight often falls on the museums, trends, and restaurants of Manhattan, the city’s other islands have vivid and intriguing stories to tell. They offer the day-tripper everything from nature trails to military garrisons.

NYC is made up of five different boroughs - Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Many islands which were once islands,  have long since been connected to the boroughs by artificial landfills are also covered here (e.g. Coney Island-Brooklyn, Hunter Island-Bronx, Battery Park area-Manhattan, etc..)

                                                        Cuisine of New York City

New York City offers a wide array of dining possibiilties, and just about any world cuisine can be found in NYC.  By featuring New York City cuisine, we're looking for historical NYC recipes.  We're not looking for menu selections that might be served at a NYC restaurant (after all, a pozole served at a NYC cafe is still a Mexican dish).  The focus will be on historical dishes that were created in New York City or served in a historical place or old style Jewish deli.
For the purposes of the Culinary Quest though the recipe submissions will be limited to 1) foods associated with or popularized in NYC, 2) dishes invented in NYC or NY, and 3) Jewish deli foods.

Example: A classic dish created at Delmonico's restaurant would be indicative of NYC cuisine; a dish served at Guy Feiri's American Bar & Grill is not.

Classic Reuben sandwich = NYC cuisine.  A modern adapted version of the Reuben = not NYC.

Food associated with or popularized in York City
Hot dogs – Served with sauerkraut, sweet relish, onion sauce, or mustard.
Manhattan clam chowder
New York-style cheesecake
New York style Italian ices
Eggs Benedict
Lobster Newberg
New York-style pizza
Baked pretzels
New York-style bagel
Waldorf Salad
Delmonico steak
Black and white cookie
Orange Julius

Dishes invented or allegedly invented in New York City
Bloody Mary
Brooklyn blackout cake
Chef salad
Chicken à la King
Chicken Divan
Delmonico steak
Egg cream

General Tso's chicken
Ice cream cone
Lobster Newburg
Manhattan Special – A type of carbonated espresso drink.
Pasta primavera
Penne alla Vodka
Red Velvet Cake
Reuben sandwich
Steak Diane
Spaghetti and meatballs
Waldorf salad

Eastern European Jewish cuisine
Much of the cuisine usually associated with New York City stems in part from its large community of Eastern European Jews and their descendants. The world famous New York institution of the "Delicatessen," commonly referred to as a "Deli," was originally an institution of the city's Jewry. Much of New York City's Jewish fare has become popular around the globe, especially bagels. For the 2016 Quest we are looking for deli sandwiches, etc not traditional Jewish fare.

New York-style bagel
New York-style pastrami, pastrami on rye
corned beef
Reuben sandwich
celery soda
cream cheese
egg cream
pickled cucumbers (especially dill pickles)

Dishes invented or allegedly invented in New York State
cream cheese
cottage cheese
buffalo wings
Hellman's mayonaisse
potato chips
Syracuse Hot Salt Potatoes
thousand island dressing
Magnolia Bakery cupcakes

New York State Foods
The Finger Lakes region has orchards producing apples, which are one of New York's leading crops. The state is known for wines produced at vineyards in the Finger Lakes region and Long Island. The state also produces other crops, especially grapes, strawberries, cherries, pears, onions, and potatoes. New York is a major supplier of maple syrup and is the third leading producer of dairy goods in the United States.

State fruit: apple
State beverage: milk
State muffin: apple muffin
State fish: speckled trout
State shell: bay scallops
State tree: sugar maple
