The Olympic Games took their name from the Greek city of Olympia and though there were important athletic competitions held in other Greek cities in ancient times, the Olympic Games were regarded as the most prestigious. The games were held every four years during August and September and the word "Olympiad", which referred to the four year intervals between competitions, was commonly used to measure time.

The first documented Olympic champion was a man named Coroebus from Elis who won the 200 metre sprint race in 776 BC. It  is  believed the games had already existed for at least 500 years prior to that date.  The length of the race was based on a legend Hercules had run this distance in one breath. Coroebus was a cook so we might have much in common with him. Competitors in those days, of course, competed nude.  And then there's that! image

Participation in the Olympic Games was originally limited to free born Greeks, but as Greek civilization was spread by the conquests of Alexander the Great, the Games drew entrants from as far away as Antioch, Sidon and Alexandria. While the only official prize was a wreath or garland, successful athletes were supported by the governments of their cities and devoted much time to training. Most of the competitors were, in fact, professionals.

This summer the Olympics return in Rio, Brazil with 200+ countries sending over 10,000 athletes.  Get ready for the intense excitement of 42 Olympic sports. 306 events over the course of 19 days of competition will yield 136 medals for women, 161 for men and nine mixed medals.  Many have big dreams for medals, but all of the athletes have worked hard just to be there.

The Challenge:
Your challenge is to work together as a team to select a roster of international athletes to follow during the games. Your roster will be compiled of 10 different sports and 10 different countries.
image Select 10 sports from among the 42 on Olympic list.
image Find 1 athlete for each sport. All athlete(s) must be from a different country.
image Have 1 team member post your Olympic roster on page 1 of your team thread in the space provided and in this thread.
image Follow your chosen athletes during the games and then indicate their finishing position on the chart.

Shhh! There will be bonus points awarded later in a bonus game. Please note medal count will NOT be among the criteria so don't feel pressure to select front runners. image

Sorry my post is a little off-kilter, Susie. It looks perfect in the edit screen, but comes out screwy once posted. At least I was finally able to get rid of the color coding that didn't execute (that's still showing on our page 1) image

ETA: per usual, realized how to fix above post after I posted this, duh imageimage

I have a question about our chosen athletes:

This challenge was posted over a month before the start of the olympics and when we chose our athlete, some of the teams had not been finally approved by the Olympic Committee. Many of the pre-Olympic trials were completed right before the Olympics started. Some of the athletes who were posted on the official Olympic site did not, in fact, make it. That happened to one of IHPi's athletes: an archer from Italy who was listed as an Olympian on the official website ended up being an alternate, so he did not "place" because he never actually got to compete.

How should I report his finish? Since he didn't even start, much less finish?

Hi Linky,

Sorry for the delay in responding back to you.  Just make a note beside the player's name that he did not participate in the event.  This should not negatively affect the team.
